Wasatch Back

Well, we finally did it. Melanie and I finished our crazy race, the Wasatch Back Relay - a 177-mile, 24-hour relay race from Logan to Park City. It was a very intense experience! We both ran three of the 36 legs of the race, running in the heat of the evening, the middle of the night, and the morning. We got little sleep, spent many hours in the race van, and had extremely hot days and a quite chilly night. Our team managed to complete the race in around 27 hours, and it was a relief when it was over. But overall, it was a great experience!

At my first exchange - the temperature had hit 100 degrees!

Mel had some pretty crazy mountain climbs...

Kickin' it in the race "van".

Mel looking ecstatic because she was finally done!

The race route followed back mountain roads - so runners were often out alone with the passing cars.

We spent all our time with our half of the 12-person team, "A Bunch of Sissies". They are (left to right, front row first) Mel, Marc Struthers, Jeff Struthers, Chet (?), me, and Kevin Struthers. They were a fun group!

Ask us today, and we'd probably tell you this was an experience we'd only want once. But ask us in six months, and we might give you a different answer!

Pretzels

MMM, this last week I have just had this insane craving for some of those baked "Super Pretzels" from Costco. Seeing as how I am thousands of miles away from the nearest costco, I decided I needed to make them myself. Last Wednesday my companion got his appendix taken out, and just got out of the hospital on monday. He is out of the hospital, though he is still restricted as to how much he can do. Yes, another day spent mostly at home. I got some yeast and made some marvelous delicious pretzels as my companion slept. This turned out so well, I have never in my life baked anything with yeast that has to rise and all that junk, but it was a lot of fun, and delicious.
